Static And Dynamic Characters In Great Expectation Essays
Static And Dynamic Characters In Great Expectation Essays Static And Dynamic Characters In Great Expectations Static and Dynamic Characters in Great Expectations Joe is a very simple name. So, in relation to that, Joe in Great Expectations is a simple, good and moral character. Joe does not change at all in the book. He begins the book showing his good nature and generosity when, after supposedly being robbed by the convict, he was happy that the convict did not starve. And in the middle of the book, after all Pip had done to him after he became a gentleman, Joe was still loving and affectionate towards him when he became ill. Also, throughout the book, Joe was proud to be who he was. He never wanted any property or money. Even when Mr. Jaggers offered him money because he would not have Pip as his apprentice anymore, he did not accept it. In contrast, Estella is a very dynamic character; she goes from being a girl with a heart of ice to a sensitive woman, although the change in her takes place late in the book. At the start of the book Estella is very mean and insulting to Pip. This is not her own nature, and that is why it is possible for her to change into a better person. Estella was brought up by Miss Havisham to crush the hearts of all men, so that is what she does to Pip. Since Miss Havisham is the only family Estella has ever known, she is bound to her. Since she is bound to Miss Havisham, she is obligated to serve as her tool of vengeance. But, when Miss Havisham dies, that bond is gone and more of Estellas true nature can come out. Since Estella is, at heart, a well-meaning person, she does soften up. This occurs after she has experienced hard times as Bentley Drummles wife, wich forces her to convert, and her cruel personality is finally destroyed by her true nature. At the end of the book Pip realizes that she has changed and thinks: ...what I had never seen before, was the saddened softened light of the once proud eyes; what I had never felt before, was the friendly touch of the once insensible hand. (Chapter 59).

Literary analysis of Tim O'Brien's novel The Things They Carried- Essay
Literary analysis of Tim O'Brien's novel The Things They Carried- Relationship between Women & Men - Essay Example The reader is introduced to Mary Ann Bell as part of a story told by Rat Kiley. This is warning enough that the story may not be true, but it nevertheless portrays a certain kind of fantasy about women that the soldiers have. She is described in sexist terms as ââ¬Å"This cute blondeâ⬠¦sheââ¬â¢s got on culottes. White culottes and this sexy pink sweaterâ⬠(p. 86) The importance of this character at the beginning is that she is sweet and innocent, and her clean pink and white clothes are a sharp contrast to the dirty green uniforms that everyone wears on the battlefield. Her boyfriend Mark Fossie is supposed to have arranged for her to come over to join him, and no doubt this is the dream of every soldier. The whole episode is obviously fantasy and wish fulfilment. The story of Mary Ann Bellââ¬â¢s corruption by the horrors of war is symbolized in her appearance when she is found in the creepy cave. The author stresses that she is the same person that she was before, an d yet something dreadful has happened to her: ââ¬Å"She was barefoot. She wore her pink sweater and a white blouse and a simple cotton skirt.â⬠(p. 105) This cheerleader image is shattered, however with the revelation: ââ¬Å"At the girlââ¬â¢s throat was a necklace of human tongues.â⬠(p. ... The innocent eyes of girls at home are contrasted with the fictitious Mary Anne Bell who did share the boysââ¬â¢s experience: ââ¬Å"She was there. She was up to her eyeballs in it.â⬠(p. 108) The legend of Mary Anne Bell is the legend of the girlfriend who turned into a better soldier than all of the young men and actually enjoyed the terror and the gruesome body parts and awful smells. Mary Anne Bell is both the idealized dream girlfriend, and the terrifying nightmare girlfriend who loses her cuteness and becomes just as depraved and hardened as the men. Neither version is a real person, of course. It seems that the men need these psychological extremes to love and to hate. Mary Anne Bell is a harmless target of their strongest emotions and thinking about her helps them to work through difficult feelings. Some of the male characters pretend that they are great lovers who can attract many women, and this betrays an attitude of seeing women as sex objects. An example of this is the stories that Rat Kiley told about his exploits: ââ¬Å"If Rat told you, for example, that heââ¬â¢d slept with four girls one night, you could figure it was about a girl and a half.â⬠(page 85). All of the women characters in the book are presented through the eyes of the soldiers and they are all to some extent used by the soldiers as objects. This kind of objectification can be insulting to women, but there are many occasions where the reader can see that there is real love going on between the soldiers and their wives and girlfriends. There is obviously a difficulty in doing this because the men are separated from their female friends and relatives, but in this situation small tokens are used instead. These are more than just souvenirs, but they become holders of deep

Economics Assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Economics Assignment - Essay Example Such a development is likely to hike the price of oil given that the demand for oil remains fixed. The pressure upon the price level is heightened given the fact the unavailability of suitable substitutes of the product. The key terms to be addressed in the present paper are demand and supply schedules, equilibrium points and substitutes. Demand and supply schedules constitute of the market forces prevalent in nation. While the former is the locus of various price levels and the corresponding amount of aggregate demand made by the consumers, the latter is the reflection of the aggregate amount that the suppliers are going to provide in the market at any given level of price (Mankiw, 2008, p. 65). Equilibrium points are determined at the intersection of demand and supply schedules; these are the points at which aggregate demand and aggregate supply match with one another. An economy is expected to operate at the equilibrium point at its optimum (Frank & Bernanke, 2006, p. 66). Lastly, substitutes imply the goods which both consumers and suppliers are likely to replace for any particular commodity. If two goods are perfect substitutes, any discrepancy in the market forces of one is reflected in that of the other. For instance, a shortage in the supply of one leading to a hike in its equilibrium price level will be mirrored through a hike in the demand for another good that is a perfect substitute, as more and more people rush to avail the latter commodity instead of the first. However, if two goods are imperfect substitutes, a discrepancy originating in one will not be reflected much in that of the other (Poterba, 1999, p. 31). The present problem is that of a situation that is likely to arise due to a crunch in the availability of oil. Since oil could be used for multiple purposes and does not have many substitutes to replace it perfectly, the demand for oil could be regarded to be quite inelastic in nature (represented by the red curve). Every Fatherââ¬â¢s Dream Essay Example for Free
Every Fatherââ¬â¢s Dream Essay Parents play an important role in the fulfillment of their childrenââ¬â¢s dreams. Often, before a child can even start to dream, parents have already made a mental picture of what they want their children to be in the future. In Barack Obamaââ¬â¢s (2004) ââ¬Å"Dreams from My Father,â⬠we see the important role a father plays in the success of the incumbent president. On the contrary, in Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s (1949) ââ¬Å"Death of Salesman,â⬠the author illustrates how a fatherââ¬â¢s dream and example can sometimes destroy a sonââ¬â¢s future. Look more:à perseverance example essay In this paper, we compare and contrast the dreams of the fathers in the two works in order to derive a lesson every parent and child should know. Published in 2004, ââ¬Å"Dreams from My Fatherâ⬠narrates the life of the 44th president of the United States. The novel is told by the president himself, who was then elected for the senate. In his story, Obama describes how his fatherââ¬â¢s ambition and examples helped shape and made him realize his own dreams. The story narrates the young Barack Obama Sr. as a clever and intelligent yet mischievous student during his early years. Unable to finish college in his homeland, he lands a clerical job until two female missionaries help him find scholarship to a university in Hawaii. His perseverance to finish his studies later provides inspiration to his son, Barry. In his letter to his son, the father says, ââ¬Å"Like water finding its level, you will arrive at a career that suits youâ⬠(45). This expresses the fatherââ¬â¢s wish for his son to find his own destiny, his own place in society. Finding oneââ¬â¢s place in society is possible through education. Although Barack Sr. does not emphasize to Barry the importance of education, the boy realizes this through his parentsââ¬â¢ examples. Specifically, the fatherââ¬â¢s own perseverance to gain further studies serves as example for the son to follow. Likewise, his words during their last meeting echo and translate in Barryââ¬â¢s mind as, ââ¬Å"You do not work hard enough, Barry. You must help in your peopleââ¬â¢s struggle. Wake up, black man (126)! â⬠These words serve as Barryââ¬â¢s motivation to persevere in all the struggles and responsibilities he has to face. In the play, ââ¬Å"Death of a Salesman,â⬠the father, Willy Loman has the same dreams for his son, Biff. He wishes for him to find his place in society, to be the best he can be. However, since Biff relies too much on his fatherââ¬â¢s examples, he becomes disappointed when he finds out that all the while, his father has not been true to his mother. The scene in the hotel where Biff finds out about Willyââ¬â¢s other woman devastates him, and ruins his life later on. Due to this, he decides not to attend the summer school and finish his studies. Considering his actions, Willy can be blamed for Biffââ¬â¢s inability to reach his dreams. The boyââ¬â¢s mindset is very much affected by his fatherââ¬â¢s actions. In contrast to Obama Sr. who serves his country and continues his studies, Willy shares in the disappointment of his son. These examples show us the important role of the father in giving advice to their sons, and in setting a good example. Despite the fact that Obama leaves his son to his wife, the good memory he leaves the boy serves as a good foundation for the child. Moreover, as the older Obama expresses in one of his letters to his son, for one to realize his place in society, one has to know oneââ¬â¢s people, where he belongs (66). To do this, Barry searches for his roots and listens to what his grandmotherââ¬â¢s story. From this, he finds out the struggles of his grandfather and his father, and finds strength in their sacrifices and dreams. The dreams of his father to be fully educated and to serve his country are enough to inspire Barry to move on and be the best he can be. In contrast, the theme of knowing oneself in order to realize oneââ¬â¢s dreams is expressed differently in ââ¬Å"Death of a Salesman. â⬠In the play, Willyââ¬â¢s high expectations of Biff disappoint the son more. Biff insists to his father, ââ¬Å"Pop, Iââ¬â¢m nothing! Iââ¬â¢m nothing, Pop. Canââ¬â¢t you understand that? Thereââ¬â¢s no spite in it any more (99)â⬠Despite this, Willy still believes in Biff. He believes that if given a chance and a big sum to start on his own, his son can be successful. This is the reason why Willy sacrifices his life at the end, so that his sons can have what it takes to start on their own. The legacies of the two fathers are totally different. Obama leaves to his son an identity and reputation he can live with, while Loman bequeathes a good sum, which he is unable to provide his sons during his lifetime. Either way, the examples of the two fathers imply a general truth about fathers, that every one of them desires the best for their children. References Miller, Arthur. (1949). Death of a salesman. The Strengths and Weaknesses of Augustineââ¬â¢s and Ireneaus...
The Strengths and Weaknesses of Augustineââ¬â¢s and Ireneaus Theodicy ââ¬ËEvil did not come from God, since Godââ¬â¢s creation was faultless and perfectââ¬â¢ (St Augustine) St Augustine was a man wrote a theodicy about the problem of evil and suffering based on the Creation and Fall of Genesis in the bible, he believed that evil was caused by something that was outside the omnipotence of God. God himself is all powerful but after creating the world, he Himself would not be able to control the actions that human beings create in changing it. When God created the world, with absolutely no evil and suffering, he saw what he had done and saw it was all good. God did not deprivate the world from having evilâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦God cannot control what happens in the world after he had finished creating such thing, so he cannot get blamed for the tragedies and bad events that happen. God did not want evil he wanted humans and angels to enjoy the world the way that he created it to be. Evil is said to have come from the off spring of Adam, who was the first human on earth. Augustine wrote that Satan, a fallen angel, had tempted Adam and Eve with the power and free will of the earth when God had completed the creation of it. This temptation was proved to much for Adam and Eve who wanted to have power over the earth, this was one of the starter points for evil. In the bible there is said to have been an angel called Lucifer, this angel was among the other angels. He was the ââ¬ËLord of Lightââ¬â¢. However, he turned to evil and fell in to the darkness. This darkness is said to have evolved Lucifer in to Satan. Satan lives in hell, and hell is the darkness of all evil. Suffering has evolved from the consequences of evil, evil had started from the small part of greed of humans and had effected the world as human beings and angels each began to disobey God. Loss of order in the world, caused by ââ¬ËMoral Chaosââ¬â¢, lead to ââ¬ËNatural Evilââ¬Ë. It was like a domino effect,
